It is commonplace for consultancy companies to provide ‘black box’ consultancy. To address a problem, a consultancy may build a ‘black box’, which is a smart tool or procedure that is created to solve a problem.
However, these ‘black boxes’ are inflexible, often cannot be used effectively, changed or expanded. The result of ‘black box’ consultancy is that the customer is left with a fixed ‘black box’ that another consultancy will need to dismantle or expand.
This is not our approach. With our engagements, our goal is to ensure that the services we provide are usable and clearly understood by our customers so they can take ownership to build on our work going forward. We know our job is truly done when we achieve this and give our customers the right skills and tools to improve their business.
We believe the only way this can be achieved is to work in partnership using Agile methodologies. Our approach is to embed our expert teams alongside our customers’ teams. In this way, we can truly understand the needs of our customers’ teams working flexibly and evolving to suit our customer needs. This approach also ensures our customers’ teams are upskilled in the process of our work, which enables them to continue building after completion of our work.
Our work with the Department for Education and Education and Skills Funding Agency is an excellent example of our Agile working relationships. Our premises are in close proximity to their offices, ensuring we embed our teams alongside their teams seamlessly. As partners we both benefit from utilising one another’s space. Our proximity is also important at a management level as we aim to understand their business drivers and assist and support them with the challenges they face, as soon as they arise.
